Scott (CEO) The other day Paps stated a desire to achieve “a certain standard” that may benefit other closers in future negotiations. He was looking for a deal in the range of $900,000, like the one signed by Ryan Howard at the same point in his career. Twins closer Joe Nathan then came out and said let the vets set the standard
“(Papelbon) is still a little young to be worried about that,” said Twins closer Joe Nathan. “He’s coming into his third year of closing. He’s got some time before he has to worry about the young guys behind him.
“(Papelbon) is a young guy right now. I think it’s more important for us to set the bar for him at this stage of the game.”
Well the Globe just reported that the Red Sox and closer Jonathan Papelbon have agreed to a one-year deal worth $775,000. He didn't get the 900,000, but I think he got exactly what he deserves at this point in his young career. He made $425,550 last season.
